Dr. Barnett is a Houston native who began his dental training at the University of New England (UNE) College of Dental Medicine in Portland, Maine.
He was deeply engaged in leadership, organized dentistry, and research, co-founding UNE’s chapter of the National Dental Association and publishing research on natural remedies' effect on the oral microbiome. His contributions were recognized with several awards, including the Dean’s Leadership Award.
After dental school, Dr. Barnett completed a General Practice Residency at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. He then pursued advanced training in endodontics at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, earning a Master of Dental Science.
During his residency, Dr. Barnett was an active presenter at endodontic lectures and symposiums. He received the American Association of Endodontists Oral Research Presentation Award for his presentation on how diabetes mellitus attenuates enamel and dentin formation. This work was the subject of his master’s thesis and was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, where he and researchers investigated delayed tooth development in mice with type 2 diabetes.
Committed to public service, he completed an MPH in Health Policy at the Yale School of Public Health while serving as a fellow with the Connecticut Oral Health Initiative where he delivered written and oral testimony before the Connecticut General Assembly to advance access to care and community water fluoridation, while working in private practice. Dr. Barnett is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and a member of the Greater Houston Dental Society, Texas Dental Association, and AAE. He enjoys reading, football, new restaurants, and aviation.
